A Groundbreaking Change at the Thuringia State Forest Authority: A Woman Steps Up as Leader
Woman appointed as head of the state's forest department for the first time - Pioneering female appointed as head of the forestry department
Hey there!
Prepare to witness history being made! For the first time ever, a woman is set to take the reins of Thuringia's State Forest Authority starting in 2026, according to the Forest Ministry in Erfurt. The fortunate individual to take this momentous step is none other than Corinna Geißler, a seasoned forester. She'll be sharing the leadership role with Joern Ripken. After holding the fort for thirteen years, Volker Gebhardt will be hanging up his boots at the end of this year, retiring from his position. The employment contract for this strategic change has already been signed.
Forest Minister Tilo Kummer (BSW) lavished praise on Corinna Geißler, commending her " unsettling awareness of the challenges implicated in the preservation and development of our forests." Her exemplary performance in her role as director of the Forest Research and Competence Centre solidifies her readiness for the new challenge ahead.
The New Leader Hails from Saxony
Kummer expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing head of the State Forest Authority for his diligent service. Under his leadership, the State Forest Authority has been elevated to a public law institution, and he tackled the daunting challenges of saving Thuringia's forests, which were hit hard by drought and bark beetle infestations. Thuringia Forest employs approximately 1,300 dedicated employees.
Born in 1978, Corinna Geißler hails from Saxony. Her academic journey led her to earn a degree from the Technical University of Dresden and complete her second state exam with the Thuringian State Forest Administration. After working as a board member's advisor in the State Forest Authority since 2015, she was promoted to a temporary director in 2019 and continues in that role at the Forest Research and Competence Centre in Gotha.
Thuringia's forests sprawl across around 550,000 hectares, with roughly 200,000 hectares being directly managed by the State Forest Authority.
