Pregnant Women: Limit Caffeine to 200mg Daily

Pregnant women should limit their caffeine intake to no more than 200 milligrams per day, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. This recommendation is lower than the FDA's safe limit for adults, which stands at 400 milligrams.

Caffeine, a stimulant found in coffee, tea, and some soft drinks, affects the central nervous system, enhancing alertness and cognitive function. However, it also increases stomach acid, potentially causing heartburn or upset stomach. Overdose can lead to severe symptoms such as confusion, hallucinations, rapid heartbeat, and breathing difficulties.

Reducing caffeine intake should be gradual to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Moderate consumption may improve processing speeds and memory, and lower the risk of dementia. However, excessive intake can cause headaches, anxiety, and tremors, and interfere with calcium absorption, contributing to bone thinning. During pregnancy, excessive caffeine has been linked to slowed fetal growth and increased risk of pregnancy loss.

Pregnant women are advised to consume no more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day. While moderate caffeine intake can have benefits, excessive consumption can lead to various health issues. It's crucial for pregnant women to be mindful of their caffeine intake to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
