Wiesbaden's Carol Nachman Prize Honors Pioneering Rheumatologists
Recognition bestowed: Carol Nachman prize granted to Wiesbaden
For over five decades, the city of Wiesbaden has been bestowing the Carol Nachman Prize, an esteemed award in the field of rheumatology. This year, the distinction goes to Prof. Betty A. Diamond, a renowned figure in the struggle against autoimmune diseases, and Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Märker-Hermann, a pioneer in the German realm of rheumatology.
Established 53 years ago, the Carol Nachman Prize is one of the most highly endowed medical prizes within the Federal Republic, boasting a substantial reward of €37,500. It stands as the most generously endowed prize internationally in the domain of rheumatology.
The ceremony to honor Prof. Diamond and Prof. Märker-Hermann is set to take place on Friday, May 23, in the grand festive hall of the town hall. The event will be officiated by Dr. Gerhard Obermayr, the chairman of the city council, and Gert-Uwe Mende, the mayor of Wiesbaden.
The work of Prof. Diamond, director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research of Northwell Health in Manhasset, NY, has significantly expanded our understanding of autoimmune diseases over the past four decades. Her groundbreaking discoveries include the development of autoreactive B cells through somatic mutation and the cross-reactivity of anti-DNA antibodies with NMDA receptors, and their neuropsychiatric effects. Her research has not only shaped fundamental research but also improved the clinical care of patients worldwide.
Prof. Märker-Hermann, from Wiesbaden, embodies the essence of the Carol Nachman Medal, characterized by her blend of science, clinical utility, and societal relevance. As the first female president of the German Society of Internal Medicine and the German Society of Rheumatology, she has paved the way for women in leadership positions in medicine. Her significant influence extends beyond Germany through her work as chair of the board of trustees of the German Rheuma Research Center and chair of the board of the German Rheuma Foundation.
The Carol Nachman Prize was initiated by Carol Nachman, a long-standing gaming concessionaire and honorary citizen of Wiesbaden, in collaboration with Wiesbaden rheumatologist Prof. Klaus Miehlke and Mayor Alfred Herbel. Since 1972, the prize has been awarded to over 80 internationally recognized scientists. Even after the demise of the benefactor, the Spielbank Wiesbaden continues to fund the prize, demonstrating its commitment to supporting doctors and scientists in the fight against rheumatological diseases.
