In an unprecedented incident, a 13-year-old girl is alleged to have perpetrated a knife attack at a youth psychiatric facility in Paderborn, Germany. The attack occurred on Saturday, causing life-threatening injuries to a 24-year-old caregiver.
The care team had introduced the girl to communal meals as a progress step in her treatment. However, authorities had been monitoring her as a potential Islamic extremist for several months due to concerns about her radicalization and expressed intentions to commit violence before her 14th birthday, the age of criminal responsibility in Germany.
The attack is believed to have taken place during a brief absence of a guard in the living kitchen. The security guard was present at the time of the incident. It remains unclear, however, how the girl obtained the kitchen knife, despite the police warning the clinic about the potential weapon risk.
The police had informed the clinic that kitchen knives in the living kitchens could be a potential weapon. Despite this warning, the clinic did not alter its approach. After emergency surgery, the caregiver is now out of danger.
The LWL, the clinic operator, is offering support to the injured employee, their relatives, the team, and the patients. They are also cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigations regarding the motive behind the attack and how the girl obtained the knife.
This attack is an extraordinary event for the clinic operator, although violence against employees is rare in clinical daily life. The case has drawn attention as an example of the rising concerns about the radicalization of minors and Islamist-related violent threats in Germany.
The hospital director has admitted that the decision to introduce the girl to communal meals might have been a misjudgment in this case. The girl had initially been housed in a closed psychiatric facility.
