Research Finds Broad Agreement on Imposing Age Restrictions for Mobile Device Usage

The Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) published a study on Wednesday, revealing that a significant number of Germans support setting clear rules for children and young people's smartphone use. The study, led by Prof. Dr. C. Katharina Spieß, Director of the BiB, and co-author Dr. Sophia Schmitz, gathered opinions on the matter from a wide range of respondents.

The study proposes several key recommendations. For children aged 15-17, it suggests a daily limit of 3 hours on their smartphones. For children aged 12-14, a more stringent limit of 2 hours is recommended. The study also suggests a minimum age of 12 for owning a personal smartphone and 14 for using social media.

In addition to setting time limits, the study recommends restrictions on the type of content children and young people can access on their smartphones. Access to adult content and violent games should be restricted for children under 16.

The study findings suggest that a majority of respondents believe that the government should play a role in enforcing these proposed rules. Schools are also seen as having a significant part to play, with a majority of respondents advocating for schools to provide workshops and seminars on digital literacy and online safety for children and young people.

Moreover, the study results indicate that respondents mainly support the proposed ages for smartphone and social media usage. A majority of Germans also believe that parents should be responsible for monitoring their children's smartphone use and enforcing the set limits.

The study results, which were published on Wednesday, also highlight the importance of schools in educating children about the responsible use of smartphones and social media. A majority of respondents believe that schools should play a role in this education.

The study's findings pertain to rules for children and young people's smartphone use. It is a timely and important study, given the increasing reliance on smartphones by children and adolescents in today's digital age. The study results suggest that a majority of Germans are keen to see clear rules implemented to protect children and young people from potential harm associated with excessive smartphone use.
