Baden-Württemberg, Germany, witnesses a surge in young midwives following the implementation of university-based degree programs for midwifery training. An increase of 32 midwives over the previous year was reported by the Ministry of Science, following the graduation of the first cohort from the academicized training in the region.
Places in academic programs are highly sought after, with almost all 260 spots annually filled. Moreover, the ministry indicates that the current number of newly registered midwives is sufficient, considering that graduates from school-based training will continue to enter the profession alongside those with a university degree.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Social Affairs affirmed that the number of study places will not be expanded, as there are still those who graduated from school-based training. The ministry will monitor the impact of phasing out the traditional training method on the number of new registrations.
Since 2021, future midwives in Baden-Württemberg have had no option but to pursue the university degree program, as the classic training method was abolished with the introduction of the dual degree program in midwifery science.

The Baden-Württemberg Midwives' Association has also welcomed the shift, expressing confidence in the quality of the degree program and the advantage of its dual structure.
