Saxony-Anhalt Expands Telenotarzt System Statewide After Successful Pilot

Saxony-Anhalt is set to expand its Telenotarzt system, following a successful pilot phase in the districts of Saalekreis, Mansfeld-Südharz, and Halle (Saale). The Ministry of the Interior and Sport has announced the statewide introduction of the tele-emergency doctor system starting July 2025.

The Telenotarzt system, tested since October 2024, operates from 7 am to 7 pm on weekdays. It's primarily called in to assist emergency medical technicians (EMTs) with examination findings, medication therapy, and treatment decisions. The system has shown promising results, with a 98.7% reachability in the first 12 months and 624 deployments.

The pilot project involved 27 ambulances serving a population of 558,000. EMTs, the primary users of the system, found the Telenotarzt support helpful or very helpful in 93.4% of cases. The positive feedback and successful trial have led to the decision to integrate the system statewide. The organizations involved in the pilot project will provide emergency physicians for the permanent integration from July 2025. These experienced doctors are trained by the state medical association and staff the Telenotarzt center. Since the system's start, 223 EMTs have been trained in its use.

The expansion of the Telenotarzt system across Saxony-Anhalt is expected to improve emergency care, with trained EMTs and doctors working together to provide better patient outcomes. The system's successful pilot phase and positive feedback from EMTs have paved the way for its statewide introduction.
