Spaulding's Drill Boosts Firearm Familiarity, Reduces Fear
Dave Spaulding's training program aims to boost firearm familiarity and alleviate fear. The drill, starting at 3 yards, involves rapid, accurate shooting at varying distances and times.
The drill commences at 3 yards, requiring 12 rounds fired in under 5.5 seconds for a scorable attempt. At 7 yards, 12 rounds must be fired in less than 14 seconds. The challenge intensifies at 15 yards, where 12 rounds are fired in one continuous string, under 20 seconds. At 25 yards, 8 rounds must hit the head portion of the target in under 30 seconds.
To enhance performance, Spaulding suggests focusing on problematic phases with an instructor if results are unsatisfactory. A score of 80% or more, with hits breaking the silhouette's outline, indicates test readiness. Essential gear includes a handgun, holster, spare magazine, eye and ear protection, target, and shot timer.
Spaulding's drill, designed to increase firearm familiarity and reduce fear, is useful for test day preparation or skill assessment. It challenges shooters at different distances and times, with a focus on rapid, accurate shooting. A score of 80% or more indicates well-preparedness for live-fire gun qualifications.
