Standardized testing for school admission

In the city of Augsburg, a crucial step for children before they start primary school is the School Entry Examination. This examination, which is legally prescribed and mandatory, aims to detect any health and development-related restrictions that may impact school attendance.

The examination takes place at the Public Health Office of the City of Augsburg, Hoher Weg 8, 86152 Augsburg. Parents are required to register at the reception on the ground floor and arrive on time for the agreed appointment. One parent must be present at the examination, and a confirmation for the employer can be issued if needed.

The examination includes a collection of the child's medical history and previous development, a hearing and vision test, measurement of height and weight, assessment of language development, standardized, playful tests, and vaccination counseling if necessary. Proof of measles immunity is required, and a vaccination record with all performed vaccinations is essential.

In some cases, an additional medical examination may be necessary. This could be due to a lack of proof of the last preventive examination, if the screening indicates health problems or peculiarities in the child's development, or at the parents' request. If the child or parent is ill, it is important to inform by phone and arrange a new appointment.

For children with physical or mental disabilities, it is recommended to call beforehand to discuss the individual approach. In justified cases, an interpretation service can be arranged if called at least two weeks before the appointment.

After the examination, the legal guardians receive the notification form for school, which must be presented to the school by the start of school. All examination results are subject to medical confidentiality.

It is important to note that the reformed school entry examination has not yet been introduced for most children in Augsburg for the period up to 2026. However, if available, additional medical documents and aids are required.

Completed anamnesis form and questionnaire are required, enclosed with the invitation. If the child does not participate in the school entry examination, the data will be forwarded to the responsible youth welfare office.

The legal basis for the examination is Article 80 of the Bavarian Law on Education and Instruction (BayEUG), Articles 11, 12, and 15 of the Health Services Act (GDG), Article 37 of the Bavarian Law on Education and Instruction (BayEUG), and the Regulation on School Health Care (School Health Reg).

This school entry examination is a vital step in ensuring the health and well-being of school-aged children in Augsburg, providing valuable insights and advice to parents on possible support or therapeutic measures in cases of health impairments or developmental delays.
