Shelter for disabled canines struggles to stay afloat - Struggling Paralyzed Canines Fight for Existence at Gnadenhof Sanctuary

Snippet from an Interview with Saskia Wicke, Manager of "De Hun'nenhoff" Animal Shelter

Saskia Wicke, the 39-year-old manager of the animal shelter "De Hun'nenhoff" in Schneverdingen, Lüneburger Heath, dedicates her life to caring for over 86 dogs, 3 horses, 12 cats, 11 sheep, and various poultry. With a passion for helping, Wicke plans to become a certified veterinary physiotherapist to better tend to the shelter's special needs residents.

The sprawling five-hectare farm is bustling with activity, with some disabled dogs moving about in wheelchairs, which aid their mobility. The animals receive therapy treatments, including physiotherapy, electrotherapy, and laser therapy. Some accommodations feature underfloor heating and air conditioning, while an underwater treadmill is part of the rehabilitation regimen.

Founded on compassion, "De Hun'nenhoff" has received numerous awards, including a recent accolade for its volunteer walking group. Yet, the shelter is battling hardship. Rising costs for veterinary care, feed, and energy are putting a financial strain on the farm. Wicke expresses her concerns, "As expenses escalate, we wonder how we are going to pay for it all."

Despite the tireless efforts of up to 45 daily volunteers, the farm is teetering on the edge. Monthly personnel costs come close to €50,000, and the shelter receives no official funding for animal welfare. The farm currently employs around 20 mini-jobbers, with recent cutbacks due to financial difficulties.

Revenue comes mainly from a Facebook flea market and a support association, which charges an annual membership fee of €50. "De Hun'nenhoff" also belongs to a select few dog pensions that accept disabled four-legged friends during holidays.

For those who wish to contribute, volunteering time or donating money can help the shelter in its fight for survival. To learn more about the shelter's financial challenges and any ongoing fundraising campaigns, visit their website or reach out to them directly.

Saskia Wicke, in her pursuit to become a certified veterinary physiotherapist, aims to integrate science-backed techniques into the community policy and fisheries policy of "De Hun'nenhoff" animal shelter, especially for the special needs residents. To maintain the health-and-wellness of the animals, she intends to incorporate alternative therapies such as physiotherapy, electrotherapy, and laser therapy into their lifestyle, along with providing pets with comfortable accommodations featuring amenities like underfloor heating and air-conditioning.
