Three individuals seeking farm work assistance are taking refuge - homeowners suspected of wrongdoing - Suspicious demise at farmhouse: property owner under investigation
In the wake of the tragic loss of life of two migrant workers after a gas leak at a worker's dormitory in the heart of East Westphalia, investigators are now zeroing in on the landlord for potential charges of negligent manslaughter. Tragedy struck a building housing Romanian harvest workers in Höxter, leaving a 19-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man dead.
Postmortem examinations confirmed the grim suspicions of carbon monoxide poisoning, as reported by the police in Höxter and the Paderborn District Attorney's Office. However, blood tests are still pending for official confirmation.
Defective Gas Heater
On the fateful day of May 7, a shocking 23 residents resided in the premises, according to initial police investigations. Three individuals sustained minor injuries from the gas, while the rest were safely evacuated by emergency services. The fire department had detected dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide in the air. Initial findings suggested a malfunction in the gas heating system, and the premises were subsequently sealed off.
The investigators have recently revealed that the gas water heater installed in the building was neither certified for operation nor expertly installed. This diagnosis comes from a technical specialist.
"The current line of investigation points towards the landlord, a 42-year-old Romanian man," according to a police spokesman. The question still lingers as to whether he installed the gas heater himself, collaborated with someone, or even hired another individual for the job.
