Caution and Common Sense: DLRG Warns Beachgoers Against Recklessness and Overconfidence

  • CEASE WITH THE RASH CHOICES AT THE BEACH, PEOPLE!*

Swimming visitors alerted over carelessness and misjudgment by Lifeguard Association DLRG - Swimming enthusiasts cautioned on recklessness and exaggerated self-importance

The German Lifesaving Association (DLRG) has issued a warning for those enjoying the summer and beach season in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Reckless behavior and overconfidence have been on the rise in recent years and have led to numerous hair-raising situations and life-saving interventions by lifeguards, as stated by DLRG spokesman Thorsten Erdmann to the German Press Agency. A little brainpower and common sense can go a long way, people!

Red Flags Aren't Just for Complacency

Embarking on a swim after a few drinks, in blistering temperatures, or in a hurry is a recipe for disaster. Swimming too far out from shore can be perilous as well. It's better to swim parallel to the beachline, for Pete's sake! Erdmann also pointed out that it's infuriating to see individuals flouting bathing bans when the flag is red. Be smarter than that! Walking on wooden piers, which are meant for coastal protection, is another neglectful act that often results in severe injuries for both children and adults. There can be strong currents around these piers, so play it safe, y'all!

Lifeguards Squinting Warily at Kitesurfing

While kitesurfing is quite the thrilling spectacle, it can be hazardous when kitesurfers speed around between swimmers and sunbathers. "We appreciate the sport," said Erdmann, "but it becomes dangerous when kitesurfers zip around in closer proximity to people."

More Safety Nets for the Summer Season in MV

Approximately 1,700 DLRG lifeguards from various federal states will be on duty between Boltenhagen and the island of Usedom this season. The region boasts 30 active local groups, 90 lifeguard towers, and five watch stations on inland lakes. Some stations are already operational, and others will open soon, such as the spankin' new and top-of-the-line main lifeguard tower on the sea bridge in Prerow, which will open on May 17.

Lifeguard services by the German Red Cross (DRK) in Warnemünde will commence on Monday, ready and raring to go for the summer season. Around 200 DRK volunteers will be stationed at Rostock's beaches, including Markgrafenheide and Diedrichshagen. And in Warnemünde, there will be seven lifeguard towers, two rescue squads, a special rescue jet, and the rescue boat "Wotan" to come to your aide when you're in deep trouble!

Last year, 29 people drowned in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, nine more than in 2023. The age group most affected, those aged 61 to 70, accounted for nine victims. Thankfully, no child or teenager drowned in the waters. Across Germany, the DLRG reported 411 drownings last year compared to 380 in 2022.

A Word on Kitesurfing Safety

Kitesurfing can be a dangerous sport, potentially harming not only the participants but also others on the beach. To lessen these risks, it is crucial to establish and follow specific safety measures and guidelines at kitesurfing sites.

Safety Measures for Kitesurfing Sites

  • Designated Kitesurfing Areas: Establish areas for kitesurfing to prevent collisions with swimmers and other beachgoers. These zones should be clearly marked and separated from swimming areas.
  • Safety Equipment: Ensure that all participants wear helmets, vests, and harnesses to protect themselves during kitesurfing.
  • Rescue Services: Station rescue boats nearby to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Weather and Wind Conditions: Regularly monitor wind and weather conditions and avoid kitesurfing during extreme winds or unfavorable wind directions.
  • Instructor Qualifications: Make sure that instructors are experienced and certified to reduce the risk of accidents caused by improper instruction.
  • Civil Liability and Accident Insurance: Ensure that kitesurfing schools have insurance to cover accidents and liabilities.
  • Regulations and Training: Enforce strict safety regulations and provide thorough training to participants on how the kite works and safety procedures.

Guidelines for Bathers and Beachgoers

  • Awareness of Kitesurfing Zones: Be mindful of designated kitesurfing areas and avoid them when they are being used.
  • Swimming Safety: Keep a safe distance from kitesurfing zones to minimize the risk of collisions when swimming.
  • Watching for Kites: Keep an eye on kitesurfers and their equipment when they are setting up or landing.
  • Listen to Lifeguards: Follow lifeguards' instructions and warning signals regarding kitesurfing activities.
  • Respect Rules: Adhere to local rules and regulations regarding kitesurfing times and areas, such as during peak hours when kitesurfing might be prohibited.

By obeying these safety measures and guidelines, you can play a significant role in maintaining a safer environment for everyone at the beach, be it kitesurfers or mere sunbathers!

  • In EC countries, implementing stricter safety measures for kitesurfing sites could help reduce accidents and protect both participants and beachgoers.
  • For the well-rounded individual, consider pursuing vocational training in health-and-wellness, fitness-and-exercise, or other fields to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer at the beach.
