Switzerland Battles Covid-19 Surge as Health Officials Urge Vaccination
Switzerland is currently grappling with a resurgence of Covid-19, with a higher number of respiratory infections than in the past two years. The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) reports 101 Covid-related medical consultations per 100,000 inhabitants in the second week of September, more than double the figures from 2022 and 2023.
The virus, which continues to mutate, has become increasingly common in recent weeks. Health officials advise that the ideal time to get a Covid vaccination is between mid-October and mid-December, and it can be administered six months after the last vaccination or infection. Covid vaccines are available from doctors and many pharmacies, depending on the canton.
Covid-19 has been re-emerging periodically, still infecting thousands of people. Infectious disease experts had warned that the virus would continue to circulate in milder forms after the initial pandemic. For the upcoming flu season, health officials recommend flu vaccinations, especially for those in risk groups due to age or health status. Both Covid and flu vaccinations are covered by health insurance for people over the age of 65.
Given the current situation, it is crucial for those at risk, such as the elderly and individuals with chronic illnesses or weak immunity systems, to consider getting vaccinated against Covid-19 and the flu. The Swiss health system is prepared to handle the increased demand for vaccinations.
