The European Commission unveiled a fresh plan advocating for the increased adoption of emerging technologies across the European Union.

NeckarPark in Stuttgart is set to host a tour on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, from 5:30 to 7 pm, as part of the Week of Climate Adaptation. This event, organised by the Center for Climate Adaptation, aims to increase visibility for climate adaptation in Germany and present inspiring measures.

During the tour, participants will learn about innovative climate adaptation measures being implemented in NeckarPark to manage rainwater runoff and promote urban greenery. These measures include:

  1. Green Infrastructure: The use of permeable pavements, green roofs, and rain gardens to enhance infiltration of rainwater, reducing runoff and lowering flood risk.
  2. Retention and Detention Basin Systems: The creation of natural or engineered basins that temporarily hold excess rainwater during heavy storms, allowing gradual infiltration or controlled release.
  3. Urban Tree Planting and Vegetated Swales: Increasing tree cover and installing vegetated channels to slow down rainwater flow, promote evapotranspiration, and improve biodiversity.
  4. Bioswales and Constructed Wetlands: Designing bioswales that filter and cleanse runoff before it reaches waterways, and wetlands to hold water and support wildlife.
  5. Smart Water Management Technologies: Integrating sensors and control systems to optimize rainwater harvesting and reuse within NeckarPark’s buildings and landscaping.
  6. Community Involvement and Education: Engaging residents and visitors to understand, maintain, and support green infrastructure efforts.

These measures collectively mitigate urban flooding, improve the microclimate, and enhance green spaces, making parks like NeckarPark more resilient and pleasant. While the specific search results do not directly detail NeckarPark’s current practices, these strategies reflect best practices for climate adaptation in urban park settings comparable to Stuttgart’s climate context.

The NeckarPark tour is a cooperation project between the Environmental Protection Office and Kulturinsel Stuttgart gGmbH. The tour is limited to 20 participants, and registration can be done at poststelle.36-4stuttgartde. The Week of Climate Adaptation, which takes place from September 15 to 19, 2025, operates under the motto #TogetherForClimateAdaptation. This initiative comes from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN).

Join the NeckarPark tour to learn more about climate adaptation measures and contribute to a greener and more resilient future for urban parks.

  1. By attending the NeckarPark tour on September 16, 2025, participants will gain insights on how science, particularly environmental-science, plays a role in implementing health-and-wellness-focused initiatives like green infrastructure and urban tree planting, which address climate change by managing rainwater runoff and promoting urban greenery.
  2. Exploring the NeckarPark's innovative climate adaptation measures, such as smart water management technologies and bioswales, can contribute to a better understanding of the significant impact science has on our health, the environment, and the fight against climate change.
