Medical Nobel Prize for Immunologists from Japan and the USA - Three Scientists Win Nobel Prize in Medicine for Immune System Breakthroughs
The Right Livelihood Award, often called the Alternative Nobel Prize, has announced its 2023 laureates. Among them are three scientists who have revolutionised our understanding of the immune system and autoimmune diseases. The Nobel Prize in Medicine 2023 will be awarded to Mary Brunkow, Fred Meyer, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their groundbreaking work in peripheral immune tolerance.
Mary Brunkow, a US researcher at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, received her PhD from Princeton University. Fred Meyer, her US colleague, is a scientific advisor at Sonoma Biotherapeutics in San Francisco. Born in Illinois, he earned his PhD at UCLA. Their Japanese counterpart, Shimon Sakaguchi, is a professor at the University of Osaka, having received his PhD in Kyoto in 1983.
The trio's work has laid the foundation for a new research field. They identified regulatory T cells that prevent the immune system from attacking the body. This discovery has advanced the development of new treatment methods for cancer and autoimmune diseases. The laureates' findings have significantly improved our understanding of immune system function and autoimmune disease prevention.
The Nobel Prize in Medicine is the first of the series, awarded annually since 1901. The first recipient was German bacteriologist Emil Adolf von Behring, honoured for his diphtheria therapy discovery. The prize is worth 11 million Swedish kronor, approximately one million euros. The Economic Nobel Prize will conclude the series on December 10.
Mary Brunkow, Fred Meyer, and Shimon Sakaguchi will share the 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their pivotal work in peripheral immune tolerance. Their discoveries have opened new avenues for treating autoimmune diseases and cancer. The prestigious award recognises their significant contributions to the field of immunology and medicine.
