Tragic blaze at Hamburg hospital claims three lives

In Hamburg, a 72-year-old man has landed behind bars, accused of igniting a fire that claimed the lives of three senior citizens and injured another 34. Dubious evidence gathered during interviews suggests the man may be deeply implicated in the tragedy, police said on Sunday night.

Did the suspect suffer a breakdown during the alleged crime is under investigation, as per reports.

The fatal fire erupted Saturday night at Marienkrankenhaus in the Hamburg district of Hohenfelde. The flame's aftermath revealed the tragedy's grim toll: 84, 85, and 87-year-old victims. One patient remains critical, while others sustained various injuries.

The fire originated on the hospital's ground floor in a geriatric ward. Emergency services, numbering about 160, battled the inferno, rescuing several patients from their burning prison through windows. One wing of the building sustained significant damage from the blaze.

Rescue operations came to a close early on Sunday morning, with the majority of the injured treated on-site at the clinic's emergency room. Two patients were transferred to neighboring hospitals. The hospital's routine care services were unaffected and continued as normal, confirming hospital officials.

Smoke from the ground floor fire engulfed all four floors of the affected building, with the adjacent properties also inspected.

The Marienkrankenhaus, a significant denominational hospital in North Germany, boasts around 600 beds and treats approximately 93,000 patients each year. The hospital belongs to the non-profit Ansgar Group, whose shareholders include the Archbishopric of Hamburg.

Clinic manager, Christoph Schmitz, has vowed to cooperate with authorities to quickly clarify the incident's circumstances while ensuring the long-term safety of the facility. Patient safety remains the primary concern, Schmitz emphasized, with immediate measures taken to prevent any further danger.

Hamburg's Interior Senator, Andy Grote (SPD), has urged for a swift and comprehensive investigation into the fire's cause to aid future protection. His gratitude extends to the emergency services who prevented an even worse disaster under challenging conditions. His thoughts and wishes for recovery extend to the families of the victims and the injured. Archbishop Stefan Heße shared similar sentiments, expressing shock, sadness, and prayers for the deceased, injured, families, and hospital staff. Heße visited the clinic in the afternoon.
