Trial initiation for controversial abortion restriction at Lippstadt medical center

In a recent turn of events, the Hamm Labour Court has dismissed a lawsuit challenging the abortion ban at the Christian Clinic Lippstadt. The lawsuit, led by Prof. Dr. Joachim Volz, the chief of gynecology, sought to overturn the ban on his performing abortions.

The court's decision upholds the clinic's right to enforce regulations that align with the Catholic administration's restrictions, based on church teachings. Despite this ruling, Volz has announced plans to appeal, arguing that the ban contradicts his medical duties and restricts legal healthcare options.

Volz's case has garnered significant public attention, with his petition "I am – my is not sin!" gathering around 230,000 signatures, and protests involving approximately 2,000 people opposing the abortion ban at the Catholic hospital.

The Christian Clinic Lippstadt, formed by the merger of three hospitals, has implemented a ban on abortions, except in cases where the mother's life is in immediate danger. This ban was a condition for the hospital merger, as it was a requirement set by the Catholic Church, which opposes abortion.

The trial at the labour court, which began today, August 8, 2025, at 10:41 AM, is expected to shed more light on the issue. Chief of Gynecology Volz, along with many others, participated in a demonstration in support of the right to abortion in Lippstadt, starting from the Christian Clinic and ending at the courthouse.

Ulrich Vogt, a participant in the demonstration, considers the abortion ban to be wrong. The conflict over the abortion ban in Lippstadt is being reported on by Radio and Southwestphalia TV.

The Catholic Church values the life of an unborn child as equally important as that of the mother. The church, as the sponsor, is allowed to ban abortions at the Clinic Lippstadt, according to the judge at the April hearing. The clinic is permitted to prohibit the chief of gynecology from performing abortions in his own practice in Bielefeld, as the church can demand that employees identify with the values of the clinic and not act against them within the framework of church labor law.
