U.S. Boosts DRC Aid to $414 Million, Urging More International Support
The U.S. has announced a significant boost to humanitarian aid for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The additional $10 million brings the total U.S. contribution to nearly $414 million this year. This substantial support aims to tackle the severe humanitarian crisis in the country, where over 25 million people, nearly a quarter of the population, are in urgent need of assistance.
The U.S. contribution will provide critical health assistance, including food, healthcare, and nutrition support. This aid comes at a time when over one million children in DRC are at risk of acute malnutrition. The U.S. also plans to donate 50,000 mpox vaccines to combat the ongoing outbreak, which has affected around 27,000 people and claimed over 1,100 lives, with children being the most affected.
The U.S. hopes this contribution will encourage other countries to 'step up' in supporting DRC. The UN's aid appeal for DRC this year is $2.6 billion, but it is currently only one-third funded. Since 2022, conflicts in DRC have displaced over 1.7 million people, adding to the existing humanitarian crisis.
The U.S. donation will provide vital relief to millions of people in DRC, including those affected by conflict and the mpox outbreak. However, more international support is needed to fully fund the UN's aid appeal and address the complex humanitarian challenges facing the country.
