This unique deep-sea creature was recently found off the coast of California in the ocean's midnight zone, a region permanently blanketed in darkness starting 1km below the surface and ending 4km deep.

The Bathydevius caudactylus is a relatively large and unique deep-sea animal, with a body that glows brightly, snail-like feet, bizarre finger-like projections, a flat or paddle-shaped tail, and an additional body part, an 'oral hood'. This hood might aid in catching prey, similar to a Venus fly trap. Unlike most other sea slugs, the Bathydevius caudactylus does not lounge in tidal pools, coral reefs, or the seafloor. Instead, it is found in the deep ocean.

Dr. Bruce Robison, senior scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), led the research on the Bathydevius caudactylus. The discovery of this creature underscores the importance of studying deep-sea communities for ocean decision-making and stewardship. Dr. Steven Haddock, another senior scientist at MBARI, emphasizes the need for using new technology to catalogue deep-sea environments.

The identification of the Bathydevius caudactylus was made after 150 different sightings of it using a remote-operated ocean vehicle. This sea slug, unlike any other known to scientists, can detach parts of its tail to distract predators and hide from them by making its colourful organs transparent.
