The Omsk region is set to expand its smoking ban laws, following in the footsteps of many other regions across Russia. The new law, which is expected to come into force on October 1 of this year, will restrict tobacco smoking, nicotine-containing products, and hookahs in public places and buildings.

Under the new regulations, smoking will be prohibited in educational and medical institutions, trains, airplanes, and at public transport stops. It will also be banned at cultural, sports, and other mass events held outdoors, except for specially designated outdoor areas.

The law will also apply to common areas of dormitories, such as elevators and kitchens. Smoking will be prohibited in underground and covered pedestrian crossings, as well as on public parking lots and in underground garages.

The distance from places where smoking will no longer be allowed is measured in a straight line. For instance, smoking is prohibited within 15 meters from bus stops, entrances to buildings housing state authorities, state bodies, and local self-government bodies, multi-apartment residential buildings, except as provided by federal law, boundaries of children's and sports playgrounds, including their fences.

The new law is in line with Federal Law No. 15-FZ "On the Protection of Public Health from the Effects of Environmental Tobacco Smoke and the Consequences of Tobacco Consumption or the Use of Nicotine-Containing Products." Violators of the smoking ban can expect to face an administrative penalty, with the amount ranging from 500 to 3000 rubles.

An independent anti-corruption expert review of the smoking ban law will begin on August 9 and end on August 15. For the most up-to-date and specific information about Omsk’s smoking regulations and penalties, it is recommended to consult official regional government publications or trusted local news updates.

Science increasingly emphasizes the harmful effects of tobacco smoking and nicotine-containing products on health-and-wellness, with nutrition playing a crucial role in maintaining overall well-being. In line with this, the Omsk region's new smoking ban law will extend beyond traditional tobacco products to encompass hookahs and nicotine-containing products, aiming to create healthier public spaces.
