Upon backlash, Saxon tables receive another €400,000 in funding
In the heart of Germany, the Saxony region is making significant strides to support its food banks, which are grappling with increased demand and dwindling supplies. As of July 18, 2025, volunteers in Saxony are now receiving a full monthly allowance of 40 euros to aid in their efforts. This move comes as part of a broader initiative to boost volunteer participation and ensure the smooth operation of food banks. However, the road to this point has not been without its hurdles. On April 8, 2025, the volunteer allowance in Saxony was temporarily cut. This decision was revisited after fraud cases were uncovered in Leipzig, prompting the modernization of food banks across the region. The Saxony government has allocated a substantial 400,000 euros for investments in food banks for the year 2025. This funding will be utilised for smaller construction measures, new and replacement acquisitions of transport vehicles, and equipment for distribution points. One such investment is the construction of a new distribution centre for the food bank in Dresden, designed to help efficiently store and distribute large donations. The organisation that will receive this financial support in 2025 for investments in the operation of food banks is the "Sächsische Tafel" (Saxon Food Bank). In total, around 900 volunteers help with the collection, sorting, and distribution of food in Saxony. These volunteers, along with the 45 food bank facilities operating around 110 stationary and mobile food distribution points, are working tirelessly to supply food to approximately 200,000 needy people annually. Unfortunately, the situation is not as optimistic in neighbouring Saxony-Anhalt. Supermarkets in the region are donating fewer food items, and the number of needy people continues to rise. This has resulted in food banks in Saxony-Anhalt facing increased demand while supplies are decreasing. Despite these challenges, the Saxony government remains committed to supporting its food banks. The initial government plan for food banks in the 2022/2023 double budget was 40,000 euros, but it was increased to 400,000 euros each for this and next year due to criticism. Applications for the funding must be submitted to the SAB by October 9, 2025. For the latest updates on this and other news related to Saxony's food banks, please visit our website SACHSEN.
