Vaccine Commission leader views the mutation of the virus as a sign of decline.

Thomas Mertens, the chairman of the Standing Vaccination Commission of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), has expressed optimism regarding the reliability of current COVID-19 vaccines against a new variant of the coronavirus. According to Mertens, there is no concrete indication that the vaccine no longer works against the new variant.

However, Mertens emphasises that further investigations are necessary to confirm the effectiveness of the vaccines against the new variant. These investigations are currently underway in the UK and at Biontech in Germany, as well as by researchers and institutions such as Novavax and BioNTech/Pfizer.

Novavax has recently received FDA approval for its protein-based Nuvaxovid™ 2025-2026 Formula, which has shown efficacy against Omicron sublineages like JN.1 and others. BioNTech/Pfizer, on the other hand, is developing an adapted Comirnaty® vaccine that targets variants like LP.8.1. Public health authorities like the RKI are also monitoring the prevalence of the new variant and the impact of vaccines on infections.

Mertens advises staying calm as more reliable results are expected in 14 days. It is important to note that it cannot be tested in the lab whether people who had a corona infection in the spring can become ill again with the new variant. Observations are needed to determine whether people who had a corona infection in the spring can be reinfected with the new variant and whether they can become ill again.

In conclusion, while current research suggests that the available vaccines provide protection against the new variant, further investigations are necessary to confirm this. It is crucial to remain vigilant and follow public health guidelines as we await more definitive results.
