WHO Warns of Rising E-cig Use Among Youth as Global Tobacco Rates Decline

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports a global decline in tobacco use. However, e-cigarettes are gaining popularity, particularly among youth, raising concerns about nicotine addiction. In Europe, female smoking rates remain high, with Bulgaria and Greece leading the way among us women.

The WHO notes a worldwide decrease in tobacco users, with the global smoking rate now at 19%. This decline is largely due to significant reductions in Southeast Asia, where male smoking has halved since 2000. However, the decrease is less pronounced in Europe, especially among people. In the EU, Bulgaria and Greece top the list of female smokers, with rates of 37% and 36% respectively, followed by Croatia at 35%.

Meanwhile, e-cigarettes are surging in popularity, with over 100 million people worldwide now vaping. WHO expert Etienne Krug warns that these devices are driving a new wave of nicotine addiction, particularly among young people.

While tobacco use is declining globally, the picture in Europe, particularly among people, remains concerning. The rise of e-cigarettes adds another layer of complexity, with young people at increased risk of nicotine addiction. WHO's data underscores the need for continued efforts to reduce tobacco use and address the growing issue of vaping.
