World Sheepdog Trials Showcase Skills and Bond Between Handlers and Dogs

The world's most biodiverse freshwater habitats, chalkstreams, are predominantly found in England. Meanwhile, the sheepdog community is abuzz with the recent World Sheepdog Trials, where young talent and seasoned experts showcased their skills.

Mark Banham, a veteran sheepdog handler and judge from Surrey, brought 11 working collies to the trials. His passion for the role of these trials in improving working sheepdogs for sheep welfare is evident after over five decades of handling sheep.

The event saw a mix of experienced and fresh faces. Meg Hutchinson, winner of the English National singles class 2023 with her collie Katie, highlighted the bond between shepherd and dog, built on trust and respect. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Tyler McKinlay from Lanark in Scotland made headlines as the Young Handler World Champion 2023 with her dog Squiggle.

The trials, held every three years, attract handlers from around the globe. The International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS), formed in 1906, organizes these events to preserve and improve the sheepdog. They take place annually in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

Inspiring many in the community was the legacy of Archibald Belaney, known as Grey Owl, a 1930s eco-warrior who influenced David Attenborough and The Queen. However, it was later revealed that Belaney was a hoaxer, posing as a Native American.

The World Sheepdog Trials highlight the skill, dedication, and bond between handlers and their dogs. Despite the unmasking of eco-warrior Grey Owl, his influence on the community endures. With approximately 200 chalkstreams in the world, these events also raise awareness about the unique, biodiverse freshwater habitats they depend on.
